Protoplasmic streaming of chloroplasts enables rapid photoacclimation in large diatoms

چکیده

Abstract Long-term (2004–2020) studies showed yearly summer/autumn blooms in the NE Black Sea dominated by large (cell volume > 5000 ?m3) diatoms (Pseudosolenia calcar-avis and Proboscia alata). This phenomenon is characterized high (>250 W m?2 photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) insolation, low phosphorus concentrations (to analytical zero). These contained >100 chloroplasts per cell, which at irradiance are evenly distributed throughout cell. As light increases 1000 ?mol photons s?1 PAR), aggregate within 20 min, usually to center of In consequence, absorption coefficient decreased >3 fold. At elevated photon flux density (PFD), P. also shows a “conveyor” moving from cell periphery back. mechanism enables continuous fine-tuning cells’ ability absorb light, likely facilitating photo-damage repair. rapid photoacclimation allows minimize photodamage PFD acclimate well PFD. We hypothesize that competitive success conditions gradients aided this short-term enhancing growth rate while minimizing chloroplast repair costs, cells accumulate nutrients for synthesis.

Protoplasmic Streaming of an Internodal Cell of Nitella Flexilis

The sudden cessation or sudden decrease in velocity of the protoplasmic streaming of Nitella flexilis is observed whenever an action potential is elicited. The action potential can be generated by an electric stimulus after its refractory period, whether the flow is at a complete standstill or on the way to recovery. The membrane potential is generally decreased more or less when the rate of fl...

The Effect of Sudden Changes of Temperature on Protoplasmic Streaming

A sudden fall of temperature of 15 degrees to 20 degrees causes a complete cessation of the protoplasmic streaming in Nitella. The recovery of the normal rate follows a definite course and the time of recovery is dependent on the temperature. Evidence is adduced to show that the inhibition of streaming is due to a physical phenomenon.

The Effect of Auxins on Protoplasmic Streaming. Iii

1. A new method is described which gives a continuous record of the absolute rate of protoplasmic streaming in epidermal cells of the Avena coleoptile. 2. With this method a study was made of the influence of malate and iodoacetate on streaming velocity, in order to make correlations with the previously established effects of these substances on growth and respiration. 3. In the presence of opt...

The Effect of Auxins on Protoplasmic Streaming. Ii

1. A further study has been made of the effect of indole-3-acetic acid (auxin) on protoplasmic streaming in the epidermal cells of the Avena coleoptile. 2. The transient nature of the effect of auxin, both in accelerating and retarding streaming, is due to the temporary exhaustion of carbohydrate from the tissues. In presence of 1 per cent fructose or some other sugars the acceleration or retar...
